St. Catherine of Siena:

  • "We've had enough of exhortations to be silent! Cry out with a hundred thousand tongues. I see that the world is rotten because of silence."

Prayer for Glorification of Fr. John Hardon, SJ

  • We thank you, O Lord, for having blessed your Church with the untiring service of your priest, John Hardon. May he, from heaven, continue his mission and obtain for us the strength and the intelligence to proclaim and defend the truth with genuine fidelity to the Catholic Faith and the charity he drew from the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Grant us, we pray, the favors we ask through his intercession and raise him to the honors of the altar. Amen.

Oh, Hell

HellHell is never far from my mind and for that I am truly grateful.  It's one of the best things my parents ever did for me.  They taught me that there is a Hell and that I'm as capable of ending up there as anyone else on the planet.  It has always been a great motivating factor in my life.  Which is not to say that I do what I do out of fear.  I don't. But in a weird way, my belief in Hell was an anchor during my wilderness years, and really saved me from going completely off the deep end.  Again, not because I was afraid of it at the time, but because I knew it existed.  And if Hell existed, then so did God.

Many a Jesuit has told me that there is no Hell, or if there is, it is empty.  (The New York Times chronicled the Jesuit makeover of Hell in 1999, in an article called ""Hell is Getting a Makeover From Catholics; Jesuits Call It a Painful But Not a Sulfurous Place."

For a different view, one a little more sentire cum ecclesia, try this:  a characteristically wonderful article by Fr. James Schall, SJ, a Jesuit who will explain to you in clear and brilliant detail why his brother Jesuits who have erased Hell from Catholic doctrine are wrong. It's called "The Brighter Side of Hell."

Fr. Schall's article was written in 2005, so if you want something more current, here's what the Holy Father had to say on the subject, just this week.

Sentire Cum Ecclesia

  • Always to be ready to obey with mind and heart, setting aside all judgement of one's own, the true spouse of Jesus Christ, our holy mother, our infallible and orthodox mistress, the Catholic Church, whose authority is exercised over us by the hierarchy. -- St. Ignatius of Loyola

Isaac Jogues

Daily Offering

  • O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month. Amen.

  • "There are very few people who realise what God would make of them if they abandoned themselves into his hands, and let themselves be formed by his grace."
