I received this photo yesterday from a Jesuit novice of the Oregon Province, Chris Canlas,
nSJ, with the following explanation: I am a Jesuit novice... and recently came back from a
month-long stay at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Indian Mission in DeSmet,
Idaho, where the venerable Fr. Cataldo brought the Jesuit missionary
zeal to the Coeur D'Alene tribe in the 1800's. I found an old Jesuit
cassock and biretta (complete with cincture and rosary beads, although
not visible in the photo) and took a photo of me in front of the Sacred
Heart Mission Church in DeSmet. It's not too often one sees a Jesuit
in a cassock these days!
(That is an understatement. Although Mark Mossa, SJ does occasionally post photos of Jesuits in clerics, which is also something one rarely sees.)
Chris: Thanks for writing! I love the picture. If Jason gives you a hard time about it, let me know and I'll send you the photo of Jason in the overhead compartment. (Not in a cassock at the time, though.) I don't think he will, though, because he is a fan of Fr. DeSmet. Also because he knows he'd have to reckon with me.
This post is bi-locating at A Little Battalion.

Actually, Chris knows that I'd love to accompany him and Fr. Connolly (the Jesuit in De Smet, ID who supplied the cassock, drove Chris to Cataldo Mission and took the picture) to the annual Blackrobe Pageant at Cataldo Mission, where Fr. Connolly traditionally plays the part of "Blackrobe," Jesuit cassock and all.

Oh, man. I want to go to that, too!
I'd even ride in the overhead compartment. Though I'm pretty sure I wouldn't fit.

Then you'd have to ride in the space under the seat in front of you.

Well, I think it's in August. And if you just take the train, no one will tell you that the seatbelt sign is on when you get up to use the lav.

I'm from Peru and I saw and old jesuit with cassock and his layer in Arequipa (south of Peru). He walks in the roof of San Jose School and sometimes He seems to be Batman xD

If I knew his name, I'd put him on my list of orthodox Jesuits!
Your blog is gorgeous. If only I had the patience to read that much Spanish! But the first paragraph was great.

Ask Ryan Duns, SJ. He just did a stint in Peru and he might very well know.

Hi again, the name of the "batman jesuit" is P. Enrique Fernández García, S.I., and now he's living in Miraflores, Lima. He is historian and he's beginning to collaborate with the cause of the beatification of P. Francisco del Castillo.
Great blog and great work you do!
See you.

Wonder if he's related to Joe?
Garcia being such an uncommon name and all.
Thanks for the info!

Dear Blackrobes -- I need references to the history of the Jesuit garb in 17th c. "New Spain" for research. Visual, guides, laws, any and all descriptions appreciated.
