St. Catherine of Siena:

  • "We've had enough of exhortations to be silent! Cry out with a hundred thousand tongues. I see that the world is rotten because of silence."

Jesuit Squirrel Gumbo

Maybe, since John Brown refuses to blog ... probably because no small animals would be injured in the process ... he might at least treat the rest of us to the recipe for Jesuit Squirrel Gumbo?

John Brown, for those of you just joining us, is a New Orleans Province Jesuit in Regency, teaching at Jesuit High in Tampa. He teaches Ethics and for the record, I have never heard anything in all the John Brown stories that makes me nervous about that fact. His legendary status is the result of odd, not unethical, behavior. (In fairness, I should probably point out that PETA would strongly disagree.)

On Wednesday I had lunch with a friend from America Magazine. (Yes, I have a friend at America Magazine. Sue me.) I asked him if he had heard of John Brown and he said that he hadn't. I said, "Well, you will." I got three words into one of the John Brown stories and my friend's eyes widened and he said, "I've heard about this guy!"

I quote the infamous John Brown: "You drop kick one possum and suddenly you're a Jesuit legend."

Indeed, that's all it takes.

Obviously, anyone who worried about the Society of Jesus may now exhale relievedly.
